Karljohansvamp or stone mushroom is a real treat for edible mushrooms. Its flavor is mildly nutty and goes well with all kinds of cooking. In Sweden's older farming communities, mushrooms were picked for use as kindling for the fire - but they were not eaten. During the 19th century, it was a Bernadotte who imported his French eating habits when he became King Karl XIV Johan of Sweden, and the upper echelons of society began to follow suit. Hence the name karljohan.
